White Sands was a popular picnicking site before it was declared a national monument in 1933. It was no surprise when more than 4,000 people attended the opening day celebration in April, 1934. With recognition came steady improvements, including the construction of unique picnic pavilions designed by architect Lyle E. Bennett. White Sands’ popularity has since grown, leading to its establishment as a national park in 2019.
