When Lehman Caves was dedicated as a national monument on August 6, 1922, an automobile road granting access to the grandeur of Wheeler Peak was only a dream. For many years the untamed mountain could only be viewed on foot or by horse. The reality of driving into the alpine landscape finally emerged in July 1966 with the completion of the 12-mile road known today as Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive.
