Gilbert Grosvenor, editor of National Geographic magazine, regretted that he could not accompany Stephen T. Mather, director of the National Park Service, on a tour of southern Utah in 1919. When Grosvenor finally visited Utah in 1932, he was unaware that an arch in the remote Grand Staircase would bear his name. Jack Breed, a National Geographic photographer, christened the gleaming white landmark in 1949.
