Said to have “eliminated for all time the terrors of the Donner grade,” Rainbow Bridge facilitated better passage over the Sierra-Nevadas. Before the bridge and connecting highway were built, 18% grades plagued motorists who braved this steep stretch of the Lincoln Highway. When it opened to traffic in 1926, the bridge ushered in a new era of smooth travel over what became California US Highway 40.
