A crowd gathered near the eastern tunnel in Red Canyon on June 1, 1925. A sign hanging from the stone archway read, “Welcome to Utah’s Fairyland.” Asked if he believed in fairies, Utah Governor George Dern replied, “yes,” and he was escorted by young girls dressed as such through the ceremonial gateway. The new Bryce Canyon Lodge then hosted the gathering to formally open the scenic wonderland for the 1925 season.
