A conflict transpired between rival chiefs on the island of Hawaiʻi during the late 1700s. Two great warrior chiefs, Kamehameha and his first cousin Keoua Kūahuʻula, were locked in battle over the future reign of the island. The events that took place at Pu’ukoholā Heiau secured Kamehameha’s place to be king, and a nation was born. For Hawaiians today, this sacred site remains a symbol of unification and lasting peace.
