Dr. T.W. Hardison hoped that Petit Jean mountain would be designated as a national park. When he approached National Park Service director Stephen T. Mather, he was told that the area was too small to be considered. Hardison turned to the state government, who in 1923, set aside Petit Jean as Arkansas’ first state park. In the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corp built roads, bridges, pavillions, and the main lodge that was named in honor of Stephen T. Mather.
