Unique sandstone columns, known as sedimentary pipes, encourage imagination when gazed upon by the enlightened spectator. The rich hues and wild contrasts of these monolithic towers prompted the National Geographic Society to name this region after a popular brand of color film in 1949. The State of Utah created Kodachrome Basin State Park in 1963 to inspire all to view this valley of vivid spires.
