Established on October 11, 1974, Big Cypress became America’s first national preserve. The 729,000 acres was set aside to protect the diverse landscape from development, while allowing some activities not traditionally accepted in national parks. Visitors to Big Cypress today enjoy a variety of opportunities such as ranger-led tours through the dense vegetation of the freshwater swamp.
