Excited by an account of three stone bridges in a remote corner of southeastern Utah, Colonel Edwin F. Holmes of Salt Lake City organized an expedition to learn more about these natural wonders. Led by artist H. L. A. Culmer, a party set out in 1905 to sketch, photograph and document the bridges. Their findings contributed to the establishing of Natural Bridges as Utah’s first national monument in 1908.
