While searching for an alternative route between Green River and Caneville, Arthur Chaffin and two companions found a valley of strange rock monuments in the 1920s. Chaffin returned in 1949 to explore and photograph what he called Mushroom Valley. Publicity led others to seek out the creature-like formations for themselves. To protect it, the State of Utah established Goblin Valley State Park on August 24, 1964.
