Fish Car Era -US Fish Commission/Bureau of Fisheries. From 1881 to 1947, specially modified rail cars were used to transport fish from hatcheries to streams, rivers and lakes across the nation via the railroad. In that time, 72 billion fish were transported over 2 million miles of track.
