As a symbol of Yellowstone’s official entrance, The
Roosevelt Arch introduced rail tourists to the park beginning in 1903 and later hosted the first automobiles to be formally admitted on July 31, 1915. Hiram M. Chittenden oversaw the construction of the monument as well as Yellowstone’s roads. By 1920, the National Park-to-Park Highway also passed beneath this historic emblem of access to the park.
