Sheltered alcoves on limestone cliffs attracted the Sinagua culture to this canyon eight hundred years ago. Despite a largely dry environment, the people’s agricultural and trade skills allowed them to prosper. Walnut Canyon National Monument, Arizona, preserves and interprets the dwellings and finely wrought artifacts they left behind.
