Construction began on Skyline Drive in 1931. The idea was to have a road where eastern residents could have a mountain experience, and be home by nightfall. Construction continued in sections, the first of which was completed in 1934. The Civilian Conservation Corp or CCC helped by grading slopes on either side of the roadway, and by building the iconic stone walls seen along the many park overlooks.
