When Harvey M. Harper drove one of the first cars through the Redwoods in 1912, he literally had to carve his way through the dense forest. By 1923, the Redwood Highway opened. Despite flooding and other challenges, the road continued to improve, while blending with the beauty of the landscape. Now largely designated as U. S. 101, the scenic boulevard is frequently traveled by visitors to the “Redwood Empire.”
