Rules known as kānāwai required order in ancient Hawaiian culture. Particular things were sacred, they were kapu, or forbidden, and breaking the law disturbed the balance of society. Punishment often resulted in death. However, fugitives, regardless of social status, could seek refuge within the walls of the Puʻuhonua. Today, the Puʻuhonua continues to serve as a sanctuary for anyone who finds themselves here.
