Water is a precious resource on the “Arizona Strip” north of the Grand Canyon. A variety of peoples have occupied the Pipe Spring area for the availability of water. In the early 1870s, the fortified Winsor Castle was built and operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to secure the spring water and location for a substantial ranching operation. Visitors to Pipe Spring National Monument get a glimpse of how water and land use have shaped the lives of people in the past and present.
