In 1877 a group of African American families left Kentucky in search of a better life on the Kansas Prairie. They built the town of Nicodemus where their families, faith, and dreams could flourish. Five historic structures within this unique settlement, were declared a part of the National Park System on November 12, 1996. Nicodemus is the first and only surviving Black settlement west of the Mississippi River.
