When Hoover Dam was completed in 1935, the
newly formed reservior was named after Elwood Mead, who was the Bureau of Reclamation commissioner at that time. By 1964, the lake drew large crowds to what became the first National Recreation Area in the country. Today, millions of visitors come to enjoy camping, boating,
and the many other activities Lake Mead offers.
