Within the boundaries of Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park are the remnants of ancient Hawaiian settlements. The people who lived in this virtually inhospitable environment employed innovative fishing and agricultural practices. They obtained fresh water to sustain life and built large ponds to raise fish as a source of food. A spirit of respect and reverence for this area and its people can still be felt today.
