Located at the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers, Harpers Ferry has been at the center of innovation, conflict, and history. This venerable town witnessed the largest surrender of federal troops during the Civil War, John Brown’s attack on slavery, and the arrival of the first successful American railroad. Many influential individuals who shaped the course of U. S. history have left their mark on this community.
