Rising to an elevation of 10,023 feet above the ocean, the summit of Haleakalā is a fantastic place to observe the night sky. The Red Hill Observatory was built in 1963 to provide visitors with a place to enjoy the landscape, and to gaze at the stars from its patio. Due to the ideal viewing conditions, a complex of observatories dubbed “Science City” is now included near the summit, furthering the work of astronomical research.
