Construction on the road to Haleakalā’s summit began in 1933. Building techniques were carefully implemented to minimize impact on the landscape to the extent that its existence would be virtually imperceptible from below. Since it’s completion in 1935, responsible drivers have carefully navigated the highway’s steep grades by using low gears on the descent, and watching for animals, slick road conditions, and bicyclists.
