Hope for a national park between the cities of Asheville, North Carolina and Knoxville, Tennessee gathered steam in the early 1920s. In May 1926, President Calvin Cooledge signed a bill providing for the creation of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Purchasing the land, however, proved difficult, and years passed before development began. The park was finally dedicated by Franklin Delano Roosevelt on September 2, 1940.
