In 1934, John L. Humbard was given the job of building U.S. Highway 441 through Great Smoky Mountains National Park from Gatlinburg, TN to Cherokee, N.C. With a crew from the Civilian Conservation Corp. (CCC), stone-faced bridges and other aesthetic features were constructed. The most famous of these included the loop over the road, that was designed after Yellowstone’s Corkscrew Bridge.
