At 550 feet tall, and 5,223 feet long, Grand Coulee Dam is one of the largest concrete structures ever built. The 12 million cubic yards of cement used in construction would be sufficient to pave a highway across the United States. President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the dam on March 22, 1941 to “turn factory wheels to make the lives of men more fruitful. It will light homes and stores in towns and cities.”
