Named after the explorer who discovered similar sites near Capitol Reef, the Fremont Indians left traces of their civilization chiseled into the walls of what is now known as Clear Creek Canyon. While building Interstate 70 in the 1980s, remains of a large Fremont community were unearthed on Five Finger Ridge. Fremont Indian State Park and Museum opened in 1987 to display the relics of this discovery.
