America’s first transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869. The most difficult portion of the track to build was through the Sierra-Nevada Mountains and over the 7,056-foot summit of Donner Pass. The 1,659-foot long Summit Tunnel, four additional tunnels, miles of snow sheds, and two Chinese Walls were also exceptionally challenging to build. Much of the same route carved out of the granite cliffs back then, is still in use today.
