Devils Tower was difficult to reach, despite becoming America’s first national monument in 1906. Motorists who arrived from the east were compelled to ford the Belle Fourche, and often found themselves stranded for days when trapped by unpredictable rises in the river. Local pressure finally resulted in building a bridge over the Belle Fourche in 1928. Improved roads soon followed, granting access to all.
