When it was first constructed, The Blue Ridge Parkway was a first in the category of rural parkways for its unique design as a leisure driving road. Great care was taken to blend the road with the landscape, and to provide scenic views of the verdant valleys and forest covered hills through which the highway passes. It is the highest and longest continuous route through the peaks of the Appalachian Range.
