Construction on Marys Rock Tunnel began in 1931 and was considered “a monumental feat of engineering.” Workers used an average of 1000 pounds of dynamite daily for three months to blast through over 670 feet of solid granite. The novelty of the tunnel drew hundreds of thousands of visitors, and in 1937 Shenandoah National Park became the first national park to reach one million annual visitation.
