The first dynamite blast intended to open travel to the east rim shook the walls of Zion National Park on November 8, 1927. $1,896,000 later, the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway and Tunnel were dedicated on July 4, 1930. Governors from all 48 states gathered in the tunnel where Utah Governor George Dern declared it to be “the most remarkable road ever built.”
