With the coming of the world’s fair to San Francisco in 1915, a road over the high Sierras became important. When donations failed to fund the purchase of the defunct Tioga Road, Stephen Mather paid the difference and donated the road to Yosemite National Park. Once travel became possible, he broke a bottle full of water from the Pacific Ocean to dedicate the road to all who would flow along its path.
