For decades, commerce sought to build the North Cross-State Highway through the rugged Cascade mountains. However, when North Cascades became a national park in 1968, the road’s purpose expanded to bring the craggy peaks within view of the motoring tourist. When the highway opened in 1972, it was renamed and dedicated as the North Cascades Highway to serve all who would follow its relevant course.
