Gutzon Borglum wandered the primitive Horsethief Lake Road searching for the perfect granite face on which to carve Mount Rushmore. Few good paths led to the sculpture’s chosen location, however, Borglum knew that if he built the memorial, “roads [would] come to it.” 32 years after the project was completed, the same highway was dedicated as the Gutzon Borglum Memorial Highway on June 1, 1973.
