The most difficult portion of the track to build was through the Sierra-Nevada Mountains and over the 7,056-foot summit of Donner Pass. The 1,659-foot long Summit Tunnel, four additional tunnels, miles of snow sheds, and two Chinese Walls were also exceptionally challenging to build.
