Six women, five who were students from the University of Utah, ceremoniously opened Zion’s first tourist season as a national park on May 15, 1920. The previous tourist season ended before Zion was officially declared Utah’s first national park in November 1919. 3,692 people visited Zion National Park during its first season compared to nearly 3 million a year today.
