Grand vistas are not the only features of folklore by which Dead Horse Point came to be known. According to legend, cowboys rounded up wild mustangs and drove them onto the point surrounded by precipitous cliffs. They built a fence across the narrow neck, corralling them for later use. Many of the horses died of thirst within view of the Colorado River, giving rise to the scenic point’s modern name.
